We lost Gordon.  Can you help us find him?  (Seriously.)

Here’s the story, and we’re collecting info on our website, too.

Sesame Street’s debuted 42 years ago today. But like most other TV shows, we had a test pilot. We created it in the summer of 1969, just a few months before the first episode aired. The actor who played Gordon on the show, pictured on the above-linked page (or if you that page goes down, here’s an imgur link, was replaced by an actor named Matt Robinson (who, by the way, is Holly Robinson Peete’s father).

Two years ago, we put together a huge anthology of our then-40 year history… and realized that we do not know who played Gordon in the test pilot. We’ve asked everyone we could think of — actors, actresses, and puppeteers who have been on the show since its inception; Sesame Workshop’s founder, Joan Ganz Cooney; and of course, dug through seemingly endless boxes of documents and photos.

Any clue would be great, even if it’s seemingly esoteric or mundane. You can email it to us at wheresgordon@sesameworkshop.org with any clues.

Oh, and one other thing: Here’s a clip of our mystery Gordon from that test pilot, above. And yes, Bert and Ernie look a little different than they do nowadays, but then again, Oscar used to be orange.

Sesame Street needs the internet’s help.

This is incredibly interesting. Help find him!

Newsweek wishes it lived on Sesame Street in the 1970’s. Everybody…dance.

Dude, I have no idea who that guy is. :\  I hope they find him. Or at least find out who he was.

Happy Birthday Jim Henson, thanks for teaching us to read, write, and count in several different languages.

And don’t forget how he taught us to imagine.

Farscape: Best Final Moment in a Series Finale Ever

I’d have warned for spoilers, but this really doesn’t give anything away. I know, since I saw this shot in a DVD extra before I watched the finale.

Ironically, thanks to this awesome ending, I’m worried the Farscape movie (what would have been the 5th season if the SciFi Channel, now “SyFy,” had a fricken clue) is going to ruin it for me.  Ah well.

Oh and in case you’re considering watching Farscape, I HIGHLY recommend it—however, you should know that the only kind of ending I like better than happy endings are endings where the hero is totally fucked.  So, you might not like the series ending as much as me.

If you’re on the fence about the show here’s a pretty much spoiler-free, but INSANELY COOL montage they cut together for the “previously on Farscape” segment in front of the final ep.  See if it makes you want to give the show a try.

Friendship is universal, but so is fear.  The parallels this poster has with stuff I’m writing about over on Website666.com is a little creepy.
On a less serious note, as much as I’m enjoying the “V” remake, I do miss a lot of the smart choices from the original miniseries.  I think modern scifi is always so drab and boring looking.  Take the bright red uniforms of the original Visitors.  In the remake they’re this gross, gray/blue color—the red made the aliens stand out while this gray/blue uniform they wear now makes them fade into the background.
Even the generic bland hotness of the actors chosen for the Visitors this time around is a kind of drab blandness that does something very differently than the cast of aliens from the original “V”.  I don’t fault the actors for this—I think everyone is pretty solid on the show.  But the actors cast in the original “V” miniseries looked like us.  It made us feel like trusting them more than the blandly gorgeous cast of aliens they have now.  The original leader of the Visitors back in 1983—John—he looked like my grandfather, or even my dad.  How could he be evil?
I look at Anna on the new show and think “oh, she’s as evil as evil comes…” It’s almost unbelievable that anyone in the “V 2009” universe supports her because she’s so clearly evil.  Meanwhile, John, played so matter-of-factly by Richard Herd—well, how could you NOT trust him?  This is what I was talking about above—he comes across as a guy you’re supposed to trust—like a politician or a government official.  And, as with our leaders, we had to fight the urge to trust this guy because under it all, he was a liar and was trying to manipulate us.
I’m not sure what Anna is up to, but she’s played so evil by the very solid actress Morena Baccarin, that if I were writing the show, I’d have Hobbes (the terrorist) mount a secret vendetta on his own to kill her—without any help or anyone else knowing.  It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t have evidence.  He just knows…
OK, I better stop typing now or this will turn into a Wikipedia entry.  Suffice it to say that I am surprised by the new “V”. I like it much more than I expected and wouldn’t mind writing for it. I might even try my hand at a spec before the new season starts in the fall.  Despite what I miss, I like the new cast for other reasons and I like the story choices they’ve made.  It’s no BSG, but that’d be a lot to aspire to.  I’ll settle for a solid little scifi show before I think anyone should strive for something is powerful as BSG was for much of it’s run.
But if it can manage to get back to some of the great commentary on trust the original mini-series managed to handle pretty well, I’d be pretty happy :)
OK—SHUTTING UP NOW…
